The Story Behind the Mural

Virginia Beach Street Art Festival mural by Rebecca Coelho featuring gothic "Virginia Beach" lettering, local landmarks, and the upper section of the four-sided sculpture decorated with coastal-inspired imagery.

Virginia Beach Side

This side serves as the centerpiece of the mural, with "Virginia Beach" rendered in gothic lettering facing one of the busiest pedestrian corridors near the Convention Center. It celebrates the city's identity beyond its beaches, inviting visitors to look deeper into the stories, history, and communities that make Virginia Beach unique.

Wildlife side of Rebecca Coelho's Virginia Beach mural featuring marine life and coastal animals that represent the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Hampton Roads region.

Wildlife Side

Virginia Beach is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from the creatures that inhabit our waterways to the birds and animals found throughout the region's parks, marshes, and coastline. This side celebrates the natural world that existed long before the city's roads, hotels, and neighborhoods, highlighting the wildlife that continues to shape the character of Coastal Virginia today.

Navy-themed side of Rebecca Coelho's Virginia Beach mural highlighting the military influence and maritime heritage that help shape the city's identity.

Navy Side

The military's influence on Virginia Beach is impossible to ignore. From the economy and local culture to language, art, tattoos, and family histories, generations of service members have left their mark on the city. This side acknowledges that connection and explores the role the Navy and military community have played in shaping Virginia Beach into the place it is today.
